When Discord asks for a phone
Not usually at sign-up. It comes up in two places: a login from a new device or network that Discord flags, and servers that set phone verification as a membership requirement — common in gaming and crypto communities.
Which means most people arrive here already blocked, looking for a line that receives the code.
One-time or rented by the month
Most code-receiving services sell a single code. Discord's phone check is not a one-off: a new device, a different network, another flagged login, and it asks again.

A number does not lift a ban
If the account is already banned, a new number will not restore it. Discord's bans follow account behaviour and appeals go through Discord's own process. What is sold here is a line that receives SMS, not influence over a platform's decision.
