Check the number type first. Most lines in the catalogue are SMS Only; a few countries also carry Calls and SMS, which accept an incoming call. If you want a fallback, take the second kind — in this catalogue that is the UK, the US and Australia.

What can go wrong
Signal offers a voice call instead of an SMS
An SMS-only line cannot take a call, so verification cannot finish. Switch to a line marked Calls and SMS — the UK, the US and Australia here — or try another country.
It says this number is already registered on Signal
The line was registered before. Take a different number rather than forcing a second registration, which pushes the old account out of its verified state.
The code never arrives
Wait a few minutes and ask Signal to resend. If it still does not come, change country — lines from different countries do not pass equally.

Does Signal accept rented numbers?
Signal does not distinguish a rented number from your own; it only requires that the number receives the code. A real carrier line and an ordinary SIM look the same to it.
Do I lose the account if I stop renewing?
The account remains, but signing in on a new device asks for verification again. Set the PIN, and move the account to another number before you stop renting.
How many Signal accounts can one number hold?
One. More accounts need more numbers.
Which country should I pick?
If you want cover for voice verification, take a line that accepts calls. If SMS is all you need, Indonesia and Myanmar are the lowest monthly fee.
