What can go wrong
Telegram says the number is invalid
Almost always an extra zero after the country code. The national trunk zero is dropped in international format: +62 812 …, not +62 0812 ….
It says the number is already registered
That line has been used for an account before. Take a different number rather than trying to register a second account on the same one.
Telegram asks me to verify again months later
As long as the rental is still running, receive the code on the same number. This is the reason not to use a disposable one.

Is an account registered this way safe?
The number is a real carrier line, and Telegram treats it like any other. Once two-step verification is on, the account's security depends on your password rather than on the number.
Do I lose the account if I stop renewing?
Not if you have set a two-step password and a recovery email. Telegram only needs an SMS at registration and when signing in on a new device. Without two-step verification, you lose the ability to receive that code.
Can one number hold two Telegram accounts?
No. One number, one Telegram account. Several accounts means several numbers.
Which country should I pick?
Price is the main difference. Indonesia and Myanmar are currently the cheapest monthly; the UK and US have no setup fee and a slightly higher monthly. Functionally they are the same.
Do I need to provide documents?
